Economic Growth from the Roots Up

The company that started selling books now wants to sell you groceries, power your house… and even open your front door. Amazon and its peers Google, Apple, and Facebook have a combined value equal to the GDP of France but they still employ less than half a million people! Their success is impressive, but how can we ensure that economic growth reaches everyone?

SHE28 is designed to enrich local economies as it grows. We created 30 new jobs in Rwanda, and local sourcing has increased the income of 820 farmers by over 30%. That income means that people can save money and educate their children. This quarter, we trained 220 new farmers- hear what one of our farmers is doing with her extra income.

Leveling the Playing Field

What's one way to prevent a Weinstein-type scandal at work? Don't allow women to be left out of the workplace. In male-dominated fields, recruiting women often requires gender targeted training programs. We’re helping our new partner Swisscontact in Rwanda retain women in their programs by providing 50,000 pads and health training in technical schools.

Vedaste Nishimwe is the principal at VTC Rubengera II, and only 25% of his carpentry technical school students were female. When we trained teachers on menstrual hygiene, Vedaste told us he didn’t realize that girls were missing class because of their periods before. What did he learn from the training?

“I realized that I should discuss, together with girls, the reasons behind school attendance, participation, and performance instead of sitting in our school office and make assumptions about why girls are not participating.”
